AIRPORT PRESS SPONSORS CARGO SECURITY EVENT

The Four Speakers at the Airport Press Security Seminar held at the Cradle of Aviation last month. It was a huge success and we look forward to hosting several others before year's end. The Cradle of Aviation Museum at Mitchel Field in Garden City was the site of the first annual Cargo Security Seminar hosted by the Airport Press. Through the early morning snowfall, 40 Freight Forwarders and other shipping company employees turned out to hear five speakers discuss the changing world of air freight processes and documentation; changes that may have a direct impact on their company’s efficiency and profitability. The first speakers were from Customs and Border Protection and they presented the latest news on how to get your freight efficiently through customs. The main thrust of the pitch by Henry Zanetti of Customs and Border Protection was that installing and using an AMS system will get
95% of your freight through the process very easily so that you only need manage that 5% difference. Mr. Zanetti explained the history and the process and what companies need to do to comply. Richard Loria also of Customs and Border Protection described the CTPAT regulations and how freight forwarders can become part of this system. The main thrust of both of their presentations is that planning ahead and doing what needs to be done in advance will save a lot of time and trouble. Thomas Carter, of Homeland Security is the TSA Cargo Security guru at JFK airport and his presentation was an overview of TSA’s regulations and how they are geared towards providing the same level of protection to cargo shipments as is now being focused in the passenger area. Tom went through the regulations, defining how they work and how they need to be interpreted to make life easier for freight forwarders and
other stake holders in the cargo industry. Tom also covered some of the education needs of the industry. The theme in Tom’s pitch was similar to the Customs presentation; an ounce ofprevention is worth a pound of cure. The FAA then presented a primer on HAZMAT regulations especially those regulations that have undergone some modification. Edward Kenny an FAA veteran of JFK
Airport took the attendees through the enforcement part of the program – concentrating on who is a HAZMAT employee and the kind of training they require to protect their business and the passengers and freight being carried. Many of the audience’s questions were fielded by our own resident HAZMAT expert, William Puckhaber, Publisher of the Airport Press and President of Pan American Training Institute. And at the end of this informative and useful seminar; all the attendees got a personal tour of the Cradle of Aviation Museum by a former test pilot with Grumman, Tom Gwynne. A comment from one of the attendees; “we need to do this more often”.
