KIDS HELPING KIDS WITH PACKAGES FOR PEACE

See KIDS HELPING KIDS on page 3
On a pleasant Sunday in late March, the cafeteria at Holy Name of Mary School in Valley Stream came alive with the energy and enthusiasm created by people sharing a common purpose. Holy Name of Mary STEWFORKIDS and the Kiwanis Club of LaGuardia Airport organized an event called “Kids Helping Kids with Packages for Peace”. STEWFORKIDS is a group of Holy Name of Mary parish children who are learning the concept of good Stewardship in their every day lives. This project began back in December 2003 when Lt. Col. Vincent Montera was on active duty in Iraq. Vin is a member of the Kiwanis Club and serves on the Board of Directors along with Richard Lotti, who is a parishioner of Holy Name of Mary. Rich asked Vin if there was anything our soldiers needed to make their tour of duty.

FJC AGENTS ASSIST IN CAPTURE OF SECURITY VIOLATOR
While most of us were sleeping at 5 AM on March 28th, a man was jumping a fence to gain AOA access. But FJC's Agent Edward Garcia already had him under surveillance and notified his control center who immediately notified the Port Authority Police and FJC's Agent Momoh. While being pursued, the intruder left the ramp and temporarily disappeared into the US Air Shuttle building. "Temporarily" because a few minutes later, FJC's Agent Harris advised all concerned that two (2)
legs were protruding from the ceiling. While his final position was to say the least "funny to look at", his breach of our AOA was not funny at all, as he will find out.

CRIMINAL ACTIVITY DECREASES MORE THAN 44% AT PORT AUTHORITY FACILITIES SINCE 2001
Downward Trend Continues as Safety and Security Remain Top Priorities.
An increase in police staffing and training, investment in security, and cooperation
with other law enforcement agencies has resulted in a 44.8 percent decrease in criminal activity at Port Authority facilities since 2001, the agency announced today. From 2002 to 2003, criminal activity dropped by 8.3 percent. The statistics, which are collected by the agency’s Public Safety Department, represent overall targeted crimes, including assault, robbery and larceny. Port Authority Public Safety Director/Superintendent Charles D. De Rienzo added, “Law enforcement agencies are constantly looking for new and innovative ways to fight crime and the Port Authority Police Department is no different. Criminal activity has decreased significantly since the beginning of 2002 at all Port Authority facilities due to a number of factors. We have placed a strong emphasis on highly specialized training for our officers and continue to work in close coordination with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety of the public at our transportation facilities. Citizens are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.” In March 2003, the Port Authority Police Department established an anticrime hotline – 800 828-PAPD (7273) – for citizens to report suspicious activity in and around Port Authority facilities.
