Governor James E. McGreevey
congratulated Gary L. Davis, the Port Authority’s Manager of Airport Operations at
Newark Liberty International Airport, on his recent election to the Board of Directors of the USTA Tennis & Education Foundation – the charitable and philanthropic arm of the U.S. Tennis Association. Mr. Davis and his fellow board members are responsible for the development of policies and oversight of the foundation. Mr. Davis, who lives in Montclair, N.J., has been with the Port Authority since 1994. He played varsity tennis in college, mentored young tennis players and has been involved in developing tennis programs for disadvantaged youths for many years. He previously served on the boards of the Central Indiana Tennis Association, the USTA/National Junior Tennis League of Indianapolis and the Althea Gibson Foundation. Mr. Davis said, “The USTA Tennis & Education Foundation is committed to improving lives through athletics and scholastic achievement. The organization works with disadvantaged and at-risk youth, and people with disabilities. It also awards college scholarships to d e s e r v i n g youngsters who have participated in USTA youth tennis programs, and awards grants to tennis programs that provide positive role models, life skills and a structured athletic program.

PORT AUTHORITY AWARDS AVIATION SCHOLARSHIPS TO
QUEENS STUDENTS
The Port Authority, in partnership with the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE), awarded scholarships to four outstanding Queens students to attend ACE Operations courses at the Aviation Institute at York College. The scholarships were presented at a reception marking Queens Aviation Education Month, which ran throughout the month of May. The students will join Port Authority employees to participate in the Airport Certified Employee (ACE) Operations course, to better understand the aviation regulations that make airfields safer and more efficient. The course trains top-level operations supervisors to enhance their aeronautical operations proficiency. In October and N o v e m b e r 2003, Port Authority operations
personnel were the first group in the country to complete the
inaugural ACE Operations course. Port Authority Director of
Aviation William R. DeCota said, “The ACE O p e r a t i o n s course is a unique opportunity for our staff to study airport operations, safety and certification. Through rigorous instruction, they learn the latest regulations and techniques on subjects ranging from airfield signage and markings to emergency planning. Their success rate demonstrates our front line supervisors’ keen knowledge of airport operations and federal aviation requirements. Port Authority operations personnel are among the most qualified airport professionals in the world.” York College Aviation Institute Director Dr. Maxine Lubner said, “The ACE Operations course represents a tremendous opportunity for our students to gain real-world knowledge and build relationships with industry experts. We thank the Port Authority for generously extending its support to establish the College’s Aviation Institute and provide students with the opportunity to excel in their fields.” College of Aeronautics President Dr. James Fitzpatrick said, “We are pleased to have one of our talented students participate in the ACE Operations program. The Port Authority is a dedicated partner, and has been particularly supportive of our airport management program. Its staff has provided valuable guidance regarding the College’s curriculum, developed on-airport internships for students, and now welcomes our students to participate in valuable airport training. The AAAE also will provide funds to cover the cost of training materials. The ACE Operations course runs from May 10 to 14, 2004. It requires students to complete 45 hours of classroom training and a written exam to receive certification. The ACE Operations course is one of four new certification programs created by AAAE to train aviation personnel to increase their knowledge and expertise.
