In the aftermath of the Katrina disaster, The Department of Homeland Security, the Air Transport Association and the Department of Transportation said that the airline industry had launched “Operation Air Care” to provide emergency airlift to more than 25,000 New Orleans residents stranded in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Participating airlines will provide aircrafts and service to airlift evacuees. Flights depart from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport to sites designated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, such as Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Passenger carriers participating in this effort include Alaska, America West, American, ATA, Continental, Delta, Jet Blue, Northwest, Southwest, United, US Airways, and Air Canada. Cargo carriers also are providing support, including ASTAR Air Cargo, Federal Express and UPS Airlines. This all-volunteer effort is being coordinated by the Air Transport Association and its member carriers, who are providing aircraft and crews who have volunteered their time to this incredible effort. The Air Transport Association is the trade group representing the nation’s leading airlines. ATA members transport more than 90 percent of all passengers and cargo in the United States.

FEMA ASKS JAX CUSTOMS AGENTS TO HELP SURVEY STORM DESTRUCTION
Pilot Bill Walsh and his 5 man crew are on a mission, "we're going to try and assist FEMA in getting some greater understanding of the level of destruction." That greater understanding will come in the form of pictures. The crew is part of Jacksonville's Surveillance and Support Branch of US Customs and Border Protection. They are videotaping all of the storm damage from Alabama to Louisiana. They are using a camera attached to this P3 "MPI", also known as a Maritime Patrol and Intercept aircraft. The high tech equipment was designed for surveillance in drug interdiction missions, now it will help save lives. Walsh says, “this airplane is capable of pretty good optics, so we can fly over and focus a camera down if we see someone, for instance, that's on a roof waving, we can then take a very accurate GPS position there and give that back to search and rescue coordinators." Mission accomplished for this US Customs and Border Protection Surveillance Team.
