| LAGUARDIA DISASTER
DRILL A SUCCESS |
LaGuardia Airport held its annual
Simulated Aircraft Disaster Drill on Saturday,
October 15. The drill, which is
required for the airport to retain its FAA
certification, offers an opportunity for all
of the many agencies that provide emergency
response to work out complex incident
command, coordination and communication
issues on the field.
In addition to the LaGuardia Police,
Operations and Maintenance units and PA
OEM, other responding agencies included
NYPD, the National Transportation Safety
Board (NTSB), FDNY, NYC Department of
Corrections, NYC OEM, NYC Office of the
Medical Examiner, the FBI, the Red Cross,
and the Transportation Security Administration
(TSA). |

| TSA SCREENER AT JFK
CHARGED WITH STEALING |
| Faces Up to 15 Years In Prison |
Queens District Attorney Richard A.
Brown, joined by Port Authority of New
York and New Jersey Superintendent of
Police Samuel J. Plumeri, Jr., announced
that a Transportation Security Administration
agent assigned to John F. Kennedy
International Airport has been charged with stealing $80,000 in cash from a suitcase
that had been checked and bound for
India. The baggage had been placed for
inspection in a secure screening area.
The District Attorney identified the
defendant as Frank Ulerio Jr., 23, of 7049
66th Place in Glendale, Queens, a TSA
screener assigned to JFK Airport. The
defendant, who is being held pending
arraignment in Queens Criminal Court,
has been charged with Grand Larceny in
the Second Degree and Criminal Possession
of Stolen Property in the Third
Degree. If convicted, he faces up to 15
years in prison.
The defendant was on duty on October
7, 2005 at about 7:30 p.m. in the Pakistani
International Airlines Terminal 4 departures
screening area at JFK Airport. It is
alleged while inspecting checked luggage,
the defendant stole $80,000 in cash from a
suitcase belonging to a 45-year-old airline
passenger from Astoria, Queens, who was
boarding a flight to India. When confronted,
with the theft, the defendant allegedly
admitted that he stole $60,000 from the
passenger's bag and that he had used a portion
of the money to pay off a gambling
debt. Officers recovered $18,000 in cash
from the defendant at the time of his arrest.
The investigation was conducted by
Port Authority Police Department Police
Officer Adil Almontaser assisted by Detective
Frank Jilling and under supervision of
Sergeant Boris Perdomo and Lieutenant
William Hanley and Inspector John Kassimatis
and the overall supervision of
Superintendent of Police Samuel J.
Plumeri, Jr.
It should be noted that criminal complaints
are merely accusations and that
defendants are presumed innocent until
proven guilty.

PORT AUTHORITY ROLLS OUT
CUSTOMER CARE PROGRAM |
The Port Authority of NY & NJ’s Executive Director, Kenneth J. Ringler Jr., recently said the Port Authority is rolling out a program announced earlier this year to enhance the organization’s strong commitment to customer service. “Everything we do — from advancing our capital program to managing our finances to operating our facilities — ties into serving our customers,” Mr. Ringler said. The program, Port Authority Customer Care, embodies four principles: attitude, appearance, awareness and knowledge. It seeks to reinforce the Port Authority’s mission of providing safe and efficient trade and transportation services while striving to be a model of service, security and efficiency. “We have already made great strides in implementing tangible improvements for our customers since the program was announced,” Mr. Ringler said. “These include the deployment of 49 additional customer service representatives at our airports and PATH train service and more attended restrooms at our airports and bus terminals.” A Customer Care committee, headed by Aviation Assistant Director Lysa Scully, has been formed to develop and adopt service standards, measure performance, set practical |

recently serving as
the club's vice
president where
he has already
demonstrated a
strong supporting
role.
One will notice quickly that Joe takes
his role as vice president and member
very seriously. Whenever the club has an
event or fundraiser planned and a need is
raised or a volunteer needed, Joe says,
"you got it". Joe is particularly dedicated
to helping kids and will do almost anything
to help those that are down. He always has
big "toys" to share or a special treat for the
kids at each of the events the JFK Rotary
Club hosts. Joe knows how to make |
|
people feel special and warmth and generosity are present in all he does. A native New Yorker, Joe was born in Ozone Park, Queens. After about 30 years, Joe moved to Mineola. Joe and his wife, Theresa, have been married 19 years and have two son's, Joe (11) and Lenny (9). 18 years ago, Joe began working "on the back of a garbage truck" for a small family owned business. When Joe started there, the business, Royal Waste Services had only 3 vehicles and now operated 60. Joe worked his way up and today oversees 200 employees. The business tries to maintain that family feel and Joe likes that he can work with his staff on an individual and more personal basis. In his spare time, Joe enjoys watching NASCAR. Joe and his family also like to travel to the islands for long vacations. Reflecting on his achievements, Joe shared that being asked to be vice president of this club was one of his proudest moments. It is an honor for Joe to be considered for such a position and we hope he knows that his cheering section is loud and definitely behind him all the way. Airport Press extends our best wishes to Joe, his family and the JFK International Rotary Club. |
