MEMORIES OF A PAN AM 842
1975 flight out of Saigon stirs memories
and a special event in Washington
Joe Alba
What could be more disgraceful than the resignation of a President due to breach of duty caused by the Watergate scandal? Could it be the abandonment of an ally? Both of these events occurred in the mid-70’s, historical years for out country and both occurred during the Nixon administration. Many were even ready to sacrifice their a piece of their family and tried to get their children on the departing airplanes while they stayed behind. This was the advent of “Operation Babylift”. The United States also had a problem with hundreds of civilian and military personnel still in country. The United States had already begun airlifting our people out in early April. In addition, Operation Baby-Lift was in effect ...continued on page 4
