1975 flight out of Saigon stirs memories
and a special event in Washington

What could be
more disgraceful than
the resignation of a
President due to
breach of duty caused
by the Watergate
scandal? Could it be
the abandonment of
an ally? Both of these
events occurred in the
mid-70’s, historical
years for out country
and both occurred

administration. Technically,
Gerald Ford
was President in April
of 1975, but the events
that led up to that
fateful April day were orchestrated by
Richard Nixon; crippled by the scandal,

critics, the President had parleyed a
petty-theft into an abject surrender.

abandon an ally, a signatory of the SEATO treaty. When John F. Kennedy committed ground troops in 1963, it was in recognition of a five-year old, 14 country alliance, the SEATO treaty. The United States also had a problem with hundreds of civilian and military personnel still in country. The United States had already begun airlifting our people out in early April. In addition, Operation Baby-Lift was in effect ...continued on page 4

1975 OPERATION
BABYLIFT |

World Airways announced a commemorative
return flight of Vietnamese
adoptees originally flown out of Saigon at
the end of the Vietnam War. The first
"Operation Babylift" flight on World Airways
left Saigon 30 years ago, on April 2,
1975, followed by several other flights in
later weeks. "Operation Babylift - Homeward
Bound" will leave Atlanta June 12 via
Oakland |
|
Calif., and fly to Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), returning June 17. The original Operation Babylift flight took 57 orphans out of Vietnam to families in the United States through the determination of World Airways and its dynamic president at that time, Edward J. Daly. Thousands more were to follow. With somewhat improved relations between Vietnam and the United States, Vietnam will welcome several adoptees from the Operation Babylift flights, to mark the 30-year anniversary of that history- making event. |
