THANKING A SPECIAL MAN ON THE 4th OF JULY
Vincent Anthony Catullo
By Joe Alba
We have extraordinary people in our lives. People we see every day. People we work with, people who do our taxes or who cut our hair or who deliver our packages. We see them in our day-to-day lives but we do not see their past bravery and their unselfish service. These are hidden from us. This is because a common attribute of people who are extraordinary is that they are usually quiet and do not self promote. One of these men is Vincent Anthony Catullo. Tony recently was honored at a ceremony on the Intrepid Aircraft Carrier in a Memorial Day event. He along with another World War II veteran, Lawrence Quinn, was given a special award for their service. Special presentations were made by Vice Admiral Mark P. Fitzgerald, Commander Second Fleet, Strike Force Atlantic and Brigadier General Robert E. Milstead Jr. Commanding General of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. Tony is a New Jersey guy; born in Milburn, New Jersey and bred in the Garden State. He was drafted by the Marines during World War II serving in the Pacific after tours in Cherry Point, and San Diego. To demonstrate the extent of our commitment of our country; the headlines in the Milburn New Jersey Item that day in 1943 was “Draft Takes Three Fathers”. Sadly, today, Americans do not appear to have the same iron and will as that generation. After World War II, Tony was one of the few to actually serve as a “China Marine” a prestigious and rare title for any former member of the Corps. I know because as a former Marine, it was always a rarity to see one of the “China Marines”. Corporal Catullo was discharged in 1946. His return home was reason to be joyous for many reasons but one of the best was that he met his wife at the welcome home party. They were married in 1948. Tony is a retired employee of Gateway Security and he still drops into their Newark office from time to time to visit with his former associates and to give sage advice to his friend, Louis Dell’Ermo, the ex-Newark Detective now President and CEO of Gateway. From the staff of Airport Press, and for all Americans that live in freedom; we thank you.
