Alain Maca, President, JFKIAT, LLC, operator of JFK's Terminal 4, was the honored guest speaker at the British Airports Group Annual Dinner at the Palace of Westminster, home of the House of Commons (Britain's Parliament), in London on Thursday September 27, 2007. Janice Holden, Vice President, Marketing and Business Development was on hand to join him. Peter Budd, Chairman, ARUP, the engineering company behind the development of Terminal 4, put forward Alain's name. Alain, one of the only Americans to address an audience in these hallowed British halls, spoke to this prestigious group of British design and engineering companies recognized for their works on major building projects worldwide and, in particular, airport projects large and small around the world. Asked to speak from a U.S. perspective about the North American view on the aviation business and its future, Alain delivered a rousing speech. Identifying several ironic predictions made by some of the most respected industry pundits and proving that neither they, nor he, could predict the future with any certainty, the best advice Alain proposed, is to figure out how to maintain an edge in an ever changing environment. Three key focus points drove home the message: 1. Think Customer – Make sure you know exactly who your customer is and follow their needs and not necessarily your plan. 2. Be Flexible – Adapt to changing times and emerging trends. This requires strategic adaptation, opportunity thinking, a high degree of creativity mixed with a willingness to understand change and, of course, squeezing more toothpaste out of the tube than one thought possible. 3. Sweat the Assets - Maximize assets to achieve operational and cost efficiencies and do it in a way that promotes profitability. In the end, Alain assured the group that while there’s a lot he doesn’t know there are a few things he does know: Aviation, Alain opined, is like a wellplayed football (soccer) match. It requires Stamina, Managing Space, Creativity, Understanding the playing field and Doing it together with a collaborative spirit. It takes a team to win. |
