| AN AIRPORT COFFEE SHOP WITH A DIFFERENCE |
| By Joe Alba |

Huan Ham, owner/grower/roaster of Star Mountain Coffee Shop located at JFK Building 141 |
|
When you walk into the Star Mountain Coffee Shop at JFK’s Building 141, there is nothing about it that distinguishes it from many other coffee shops in the New York area. But how many coffee shop owners can say that the coffee they serve comes from a 125 acre coffee plantation in the highland of central Honduras that they own, cultivate, and then; roast the coffee beans right on their premises at JFK. Huan Ham is the proprietor of Star Mountain Coffee Shop and his story begins in Taiwan. Ham’s dad was in the Merchant Marine and it was this legacy of love of travel that brought Ham to the US in 1973 at the tender age of 15. Ham enrolled in Junior High School and subsequently attended the High School of Music and Art in New York City. QUEENS ZONTA LUNCHEON COMMEMORATES
AMELIA EARHART AWARD WINNER |
The Zonta Club of Greater Queens, recently chartered in June 2003 is part of an organization global in scope with 33,000 members in 67 countries. Zonta’s mission is to advance the legal, economic, educational and health status of women worldwide via services, fund raising. Recently, the club had a luncheon at Republic Airport’s 56th Fighter Group Restaurant where it celebrated the selection of Jessica Scharle as the winner of the 5th Annual Amelia Earhart Award. We all know about Amelia Earhart but Jessica is a new name for us. This young lady’s courage is just as special as the famous female aviatrix. Jessica had a difficult entry into life; being born with severe birth defects that would have |

defeated the strongest of us. But instead of making her difficulties defeat her, she overcame them. Jessica has carved out a useful life through shear effort and determination. She is a recent graduate of the University of North Carolina working two jobs to earn enough money to finish school. And after graduating, she became fascinated with flight and decided to learn how to fly. Jessica was recently awarded an Able Flight Scholarship. At the award luncheon guests heard from a Long Island teacher who was lucky enough to experiment with weightlessness flight conducted by NASA, and thsen from an Senior FAA Controller who spoke about Air Traffic Control and Light Pollution and finally, we heard about Adventures in Flying from a flight instructor. The women of Zonta were great hosts and the lunch crowd was actually listening to the speakers instead of holding their own conversations. Zonta is looking for a “few good women” and we encourage Airport people to look into becoming part of this group.
